“I have heard the mermaids singing,
each to each . . . "

- from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot

. . . drinking sunshine from a paper cup

“I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each”

waiting for the blue, the muted opera

drifting down from the upper floor

“I do not think that they will sing to me”

through 100 years of silence, and the quiet, of the night

“I have seen them riding seaward on the waves”

perhaps we will have coffee by the window, and the sky

“Combing the white hair of the waves blown back”

I will wash naked in the rain

with my hair long in the cradle

“When the wind flows the water white and black”

I will dress in flowers white,

weave them dear against my skin

“We have lingered in the chambers of the sea”

and hand in hand, wind our way down

stone paths, to the river deep and green

“By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown”

and against the soft of poems sweet

“Till human voices wake us and we drown.”

The loving heart well . . .

past war toys

containers

and signs from God

on a singing blue sky day.

(Inspired by the Muse and Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.)

“ The bells in the wind

whisper her name “

She sat by the side of the road

you could smell the forest

the quiet and nothing

the years of disease

the cold of winter

as the seasons passed

the quiet and nothing

she sat by the side of the road

the quiet and the light warm.
